- It was introduced to replace the non-binding 2011 Sports Code with a legally enforceable framework and establish standard term limits, mandate athlete and gender representation, create a specialized dispute tribunal, and bring transparency to sports bodies
- It also aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and good governance in sports administration
Key Provisions
- Age Limit for Office-Bearers: 25–70 years.
- Age can be extended up to 75 years if permitted by the concerned international sports federation.
- Tenure Limit: Maximum three consecutive terms for office-bearers.
Institutional Framework
- National Sports Board (NSB):
- Established as the regulatory body for recognition and oversight of sports organizations.
- National Sports Tribunal (NST):
- Established for adjudication of sports-related disputes and grievances.
RTI Provision
- Recognized sports bodies receiving government financial assistance will be treated as Public Authorities under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005.
Important Exception --
- Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is excluded from this provision as it does not receive direct government funding.
