Following the receipt of Presidential assent for the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026;
Amaravati has been granted statutory status as the state's sole capital, which will be deemed effective retrospectively from June 2, 2024.
A formal request for statutory recognition was made through a resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on March 28, 2026.
The statutory confirmation has officially neutralized the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party's (YSRCP) '3-capital' proposal (Visakhapatnam as the executive capital, Kurnool as the judicial capital, and Amaravati as the legislative capital).
The foundation stone for the development of Amaravati was laid in the year 2015 during the tenure of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
It is a state-of-the-art greenfield city located on the banks of the Krishna River.
